| 1 | Foremast | Mast nearest the bow of a ship |

| 3 | Mizzen | A fore and aft sail on the mizzenmast, the mast aft of the mainmast. |
| 4 | Royal Mast | Small mast right above the topgallant. |
| 5 | Shroud | One of the lines (ropes) holding up a mast. |
| 6 | Studding Sail | Light sail set at the side of a principal square sail of a ship in free winds |
| 7 | Topsail | The sail above the lowermost sail. |
| 8 | Topgallant | Spars above the topmast and below the royal mast. |
